Engadget has always made an Oakley product seem bad. the people over at ilounge though have been very fair with their opinions about the thump line.

There's always 2 sides to a story. We should be glad not everybody's enthousiastic about the Oakley / Motorola products or they would end up being the VW Golf of electronics.

Anyone know if it's gonna come in any color but black?

From what i know there are a couple colors ... I will post the Color when It is ok to post...sorry , but if you have seen thump 2... along those lines

as long as it's not pictures, it's probably OK. and now that there are pictures out, even that might be cool. one of the mods will be able to say for sure. you can give us prices, SKUs, colorways, etc.

Just colorways until it's officially released to be safe.

While I'm sure we'd all like to see more info right now, please do not post any pictures or details until they are (or are allowed to be) released to the public.

it seems to be more of a preview than a review. I didn't see anything noted about its actual performance other than battery life.

why do they have to base everythig on gascan? i personaly dont like it that much.......

That's because the "Gascan" style is now considered a family the way we had Jackets (Eye, Straight, Minute) and Frogskin (Frogskin, V, X, XX, Monster Dog) families until just recently when they broke it all down by frame material.

The base curve comes to design and function ... a useable piece of eyewear, Oakley being Sports minded first think about Eye-coverage , less base = less coverage ..from wind, light and obstruction of vision. We want you to have eyewear that feels like you dont have anything on. lesser base curve lets you see the frame, and it blocks your view.

and i wouldn't really agree it is Frame material... Gas Can and Striaght Jacket are all under O-matter ... but so is Pocket , and Four two total different base curves ... material has little, if nothing to do with what is most important, is Design. We do tend to use a familair style ..Frogskin( gen 2 and 3) to Trench Coat , to Monster Doggle , to Oil Drum. This is a succesion from familiar styling(mostly lens size) updated though design.

I was just commenting on why everything looks Gascan now as well but I'm not sure you were following. As you say, it comes down to design, not base curve or unob or lack of unob and so on. In the past the styles were broken into families. Jacket family, Frogskin Family, Wires, X-Metal, Zeros, M-frames and eventually new categories like the Over The Top family for funkier styles.

Now when you search for styles the family system is gone and styles are categorized (online for example) by frame material now. There are no more families for organizational purposes. But the Gascan has created such a distinct style that it has brought upon a new family for styles based on it as styles in teh past had to crea the old system. I actually got this from a new product tech sheet.

So the Gascan, Thump 2, Oil Drum, ORokr, Canteen are all part of this new family. The way the family sytem had worked then with the Eye Jacket (EJ > TrenchC > SJ > TopC > RJ > Minute >>>) and the Frogskin (Frog1 > Frog2 > Five > X > XX > Four > Five2 > MD >>>) spawing their own long running families over the last 8-10 years.

yes , i see where you are coming from .. and yes there are family's in CS we were taught to break them down that to figure out what each customer had... Frogskin .. no unobtainium ... jacket family unobtainium either nose or stems or both.. but I think the family is even more diverse then ... because Gas Can uses a different Lense ... it is toric vs .. spherical.. now Oil drum is sherical and so is Thump 1 .
So this is how Oakley has alway divided families.. first Material ... them Lense one lens or 2, then unobtainium ... then more specifics, but everything changed this last year when we could start useing a 2 lens toric design ... so I think those will always differ from the rest of eyewear (as families go) So if there is a Gas Can Family I think of them as Gas Can, Thump 2, Canteen, ... then you have Monster Dog, then Doggle, Oil Drum, Twitch, etc.... but ..hey it's all just eyewear in the end right...?
